
The Shockers couldn't make it to the final at the Region IV tournament the past weekend. KU won 3-1 at one of the two semi-final games and qualified to the final. With two key players missing, WSU found its way by beating number three ranked team Texas A & M 1-0 and University of Texas on penalty shots, but the luck was not on their side. Seven players from WSU were chosen for the all-tournament team. They were the goalkeeper Erin Chaffel; defenders Rodrigo Nogués and Claudio Dalla; midfielders Jason Haas and David Guerrero; and forwards Juan Nogués and Sebastian Somoza. The first game was played on friday night, and WSU won with a goal from midfielder David Guerrero at the 11th minute. On saturday, Oklahoma International did not show up and WSU qualified first in the group with 16 points. On quarterfinal, the opponent was University of Texas at Austin. UT scored first at the 14th minute, and the equalizer came two minutes before the game was over by striker Sebastian Somoza. The game ended tied and PK's gave WSU a 4-2 victory. Jason Haas, Juan Nogués, Sebastian Somoza and goalkeeper Erin Chaffel scored their kicks. The semifinal game against KU ended 1-3, giving WSU its first defeat of the season. The game was tied at 1 until the 10th minute of the second half, when Ku scored twice in less than 5 minutes. Midfielder Guerrero saw a yellow card, while defender Rodrigo Nogués saw the red one at the 77th minute. WSU ranks fourth now at the NIRSA rankings, the best position ever for the team, gaining two positions from the 6th spot. For coach Phil Marcus the team played great soccer for moments, but felt the absences of key players Jalal Abdelmajid and captain Ammar Alamood, both injured.
